Lisa's Hot Sauce
We were cleaning out the pantry the other day and I forgot that I had a hot sauce making kit. It was a gift that I never got around to using. I decided to document it all and here are the results.
First off it was super easy to do. The kit came with four bottles, dried peppers, a strainer, funnel and some well designed instructions.
The peppers were dry and had a great smell to them. Once I opened the container I knew this was going to be some tasty hot sauce. There was a good mix of spices and peppers. I fired up the stove and stared to brown them. Heating up the mixture was like spraying pepper spray. I made the mistake of smelling it and got some in my nose and started to cough and coke. Great stuff.
Once heated I added some salt and vinegar and brought it to a boil. Once it boiled for a few minutes I took it off and blended it. It smelled great, at this point I still did not taste it.
It had the consistency of baby food so I blended it some more. I then strained it and it still felt a little thick so I pressed on and just removed the strainer and poured in the goodness.
Not sure if I measured wrong or if it was supposed to be thinner but I was only able to get three bottles out of it. The kit came with these cool little bottles that closed with corks. It was a nice touch for some homemade hot sauce.
These were the first batch of many. I want to experiment with other peppers and spices and see what I can conjure up. But no sauce is complete without a name and label. My wife Lisa recently started to eat hot sauce its been about a year or so that she acquired the taste and so I designed some fun labels to go along with this batch. It was a great project that came full circle. From cooking to photography and design. Can’t wait for the next batch!
